“Havana is very much like a rose. It has petals and it has thorns.
So it depends on how you grab it, but in the end it always grabs you.”

– Fico Fellove, from the movie Lost City

This Eyes On Photo World 7-day workshop is suited for photographers of varying skill levels who are seeking to take their photography in exciting new directions. With its iconic capital, Havana, as your backdrop, Eyes On Photo World (EOPW) will expose you to the richness of the visual spectacle that is Cuban culture and introduce you to methods that will simplify your approach and help you create more compelling photographs in this vibrant setting.

Using a combination of classroom and in-field learning sessions, EOPW will show you how the fundamental tools of photography are used together to marry the technical aspects of a photograph with the personal artistic expression only you can bring to your work. All skill levels, from beginners to seasoned amateurs, can benefit from this simplified approach to making more intentional and meaningful photographs. Small group sizes will allow participants to experience a more intimate interaction with the warm and welcoming people of Cuba, and facilitate meaningful one-on-one coaching from your instructors.

You can expect to leave our workshop with a set of skills that are transferrable to wherever and whatever you choose to photograph in the future, and a folio of evocative images that will inspire your creative journey.

Tour Overview

With more than 500 years of colourful history to draw on, Cuba has been shaped in ways that make it truly unique in the Americas. Havana is particularly appealing to photographers for its staggering visual diversity, an eclectic melange of old and new filtered through the faded, gritty patina of yesteryear.

Havana’s distinct vitality and flair for life is played out in its streets, so much of your time will be spent there on foot so you can truly immerse yourself in a photographic headspace and linger over the special moments you discover. In order to maximize your time shooting in the focus neighbourhoods of Vieja, Centro and Vedado, we have dedicated transport so that we can avoid lengthy and tiring “hikes” crosstown.

We have arranged special photo sessions to challenge your skills, including shooting a dancer against the urban backdrop, a visit to a barrio gym to capture boxers in training, and other activities of visual interest. Rest-assured that if we unearth a photographic goldmine, we will stay longer to mine it! If you are counting on relaxing days at the beach, leisurely meals, shopping and midday naps, then this is probably not the tour for you.

Our daylight hours will be dedicated to shooting in the field with some in-class sessions to revisit some of the core artistic and technical photographic fundamentals. The evenings are yours to salsa till dawn if you so choose… just save some energy to join our early-bird morning sessions to catch the light of the new day!

The Eyes On Havana Workshop itinerary has been carefully crafted to maximize your photographic and learning opportunities, however, a degree of flexibility in our daily schedule is to be anticipated owing to the rhythms of Cuban life, as well as to allow for spontaneous photographic opportunities that may arise.

Here are brief overviews of the neighbourhoods where you’ll spend the most time.

Vieja – A UNESCO World Heritage site and a photographer’s bonanza! Expect a densely packed study in extremes, a medley of colonial splendor, neglect and squalor, where magnificently restored boutique hotels or restaurants stand shoulder-to-shoulder with decrepit, crumbling buildings patiently waiting for restoration. Primarily a mixture of street and architectural photography with visits to a local boxing gym to photograph a training session, an artistic urban soccer pitch, Fototeca photo centre, the Taller Experimental de Grafica, and the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes for visual inspiration.

Centro – An open window into the daily routine of Habaneros, it is busy, noisy and chaotic. Architecture influences span the 17th to 20th centuries and if urban decay interests you then you will find Centro a very picturesque study in decomposition. Centro is primarily residential in character with a mix of commercial development along major arterial roads. Highlights include the Barrio Chino (Chinatown), the Paseo de Prado (Marti), the pedestrian zone on San Rafeal, Callejon Hamel, Parque Antonio Maceo, and perhaps a guided tour of the magnificent Gran Teatro.

Vedado – Provides a more authentic, less contrived, snapshot of life in Havana today. It is considered the central business district, peppered with affluent stately homes on lush tree-lined streets. Perhaps not as photogenic in terms of colonial architecture, Vedado presents a range of photographic opportunities that you cannot find in Vieja, like the famous Coppelia Ice Cream Parlour, the Universidad de La Habana, the Plaza de la Revelucion, the Necropolis Cristobal Colon, the Napolean Museum, and iconic hotels like the Nacional, the Capri, and the Habana Libre.

The Malecon – Havana’s quintessential street, is a massive open-air living room where everyone is invited! This iconic boulevard offers up a fluid microcosm of life in Havana, so naturally, it offers an varied mix of photographic opportunities, including Havana’s photographic big three: people, cars and architecture. Habaneros will tell you that it is the place you NEED to visit when you come to Havana, a human mosaic of lovers, fishermen, musicians, families, tourists, runners, walkers, rum drinkers, jinteros and jinteras, and police. Add in the vast expanses of the sea and the sky, and the Malecon is a place where you and your camera will spend some quality time! Repeat visits will ensure you capture optimal light for dramatic sunsets, parades of vintage automobiles and loads of local colour.

Vinales – Characterized by beautiful limestone formations and agricultural preserves, this area to the west of Havana shifts our focus to rural life. Yet another of Cuba’s UNESCO World Heritage sites, this overnight side-trip will allow you to capture the beauty of landscapes, traditional agricultural methods, and portraits of wonderful Cuban faces, so full of character and life! Additional stops will take in Los Jazmines, a tobacco farm, Vinales town and surrounding area, the fantastically quirky Fusterlandia, and a sunset shoot at playa Baracoa.
